History of Mother’s Day | Why we celebrate Mother's Day?
Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be discovered back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who commenced this festival in honour of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. But the modern version of Mother's day is originated from the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday. "It used to be a major tradition in the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe and the used to celebrate Mother's Day on the fourth Sunday in Lent and was originally seen as a time when the faithful would return to their “mother church”—the main church in the vicinity of their home—for a special service. As time passed, the tradition of Mothering Sunday transformed into a more profane occasion, in which children celebrated the closeness of motherhood and present their mothers with flowers and other tokens of appreciation. This custom eventually faded in popularity before merging with the American Mother’s Day in the 1930s and 1940s.
In the United States, the beginnings of Mother’s Day was observed before the Civil War when Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia helped start “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs” to teach local women how to properly care for their children. Years later these clubs transformed into a unified team and in 1868 Jarvis organized “Mothers’ Friendship Day,” at which mothers gathered with former Union and Confederate soldiers to promote reconciliation. The official Mother’s Day began in the 1900s as a result of the efforts of Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis. Following her mother’s 1905 death, Anna Jarvis wanted to honour this and to set aside a day to honour all mothers because she believed a mother is "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world". She hoped that on this day all the mothers will be celebrated and the bonds of the family would strengthen as a whole. On the 8th of May, 1914, the United States Congress designated the 2nd Sunday of the month as Mother's Day. President Woodrow Wilson also declared this day as a national holiday. In India, we celebrate Mother's Day according to the International calendar.
